The Folk Museum of Indian Immigration is a very popular tourist destination of Mauritius. It is also one of the most interesting attractions of the country. As a specialized museum under the Mauritius Museums Council Act 2000, the Folk Museum of Indian Immigration is run by the Mahatma Gandhi Institute. The Museum is home to the Indian Immigration Archives which is a record of 2000 credentials containing a catalog of almost 450,000 indented immigrants from India, some marriage certificates dating between 1850 and 1920, contractual appointment of Indentured Laborers and their circulation in Sugar Estates. The Indian Immigration Archives even has the original passport size photographs of nearly 225,000 Indentured Laborers. The Folk Museum of Indian Immigration is a very interesting place to visit. It is historically rich and has a lot of cultural heritage associated with it. The museum remains open daily from 9 in the morning to 4 in the evening. It is closed on weekends and public holidays.
